Overview

Matthew Chung is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on preparation and prosecution of patent applications, primarily in in the fields of software and electrical engineering.

Matt has prosecuted patent applications covering various technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, database, cloud computing, virtual machines, and wireless networks. He can tackle complex technologies by using his experience combined with his life science and software background. In addition, Matt also understands unique business and legal challenges faced by different clients, based on his representation of companies ranging from Fortune 100 to startups.

Before joining private practice, Matt was an in-house counsel for a Fortune 100 company, during which he managed a patent portfolio covering natural language processing, wireless networking, and machine learning systems. Matt served as a lead intellectual property counsel for acquisitions of several technology companies, as well as divestitures of existing patent portfolios. He also served as a lead counsel in developing a corporate-wide policy for patent prosecution strategy.

Matt also has litigation and licensing experience. He has represented clients in federal district court cases, handling motion and discovery matters as well as negotiating patent licenses. On numerous occasions, Matt delivered great results for his clients, from obtaining favorable settlements for patent owners to vigorously defending clients that were accused of infringement.

As an avid software programmer, Matt has coded various software programs including productivity tools and video games. Matt is knowledgeable in many programming languages including JavaScript, Python, C++, and PHP. His enthusiasm and passion in software development allow him to connect well with inventors.

While attending law school, Matt was Chair of its Patent Law Program. He also served as a legal intern at an intellectual property law firm based in New York City.

Matt was recognized in 2022 as one of the "Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch" for Intellectual Property Law by The Best Lawyers in America®.
