Insights: Events Moral Rights and Visual Artists Right Act (VARA)

2019 Washington State Bar Association Legal Frames for the Arts CLE

What are moral rights? This CLE presentation examines the moral rights of artists, their origin in French law, how they work in Europe, and why these rights are treated so different in the U.S. The presenters summarize the provisions of the Visual Artists’ Rights Act (VARA)—the U.S. Copyright Act’s codification of moral rights in our country—showcase a few representative cases and state statutes, and suggest where artists’ moral rights in the United States may be headed.
