Insights: Events Patent Litigation 2019: Advanced Techniques & Best Practices

Practising Law Institute

Silicon Valley Partner Jordan Jones participated in “Patent Litigation 2019: Advanced Techniques & Best Practices,” a conference presented by the Practising Law Institute and held on November 13-14, in New York. Jordan spoke on a panel entitled “Delivering an Effective Opening Statement in Patent Cases (Plaintiff v. Defendant).” As part of a live demonstration for the audience, two skilled trial lawyers delivered opening statements against one another, one for a plaintiff and the other for a defendant, in a mock patent case. A jury consultant critiqued and commented on the openings.

Along with Jordan, Gil Calvillo (Calvillo & Associates), Keith Hummel (Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP), and J. Lee Meihls (Trial Partners, Inc.) then discussed the most important elements of an opening statement and common mistakes made or missed opportunities by both the plaintiff’s and defense counsel in delivering these statements.
