Patent Trends In the Expanding World of Blockchain

Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton's Allison Gaul, an associate in KT's Washington, DC office wrote an article for Law360 on patent trends in the expanding world of blockchain. She notes that patent filings related to blockchain technology continue to grow in several industries, including financial services. In fact, she notes that a significant portion of the patent applications come from noncryptocurrency fintech applications such as account storage, authentication, authorization and accounting and that the three largest generators of blockchain patent filings are International Business Machines Corp., Bank of America Corp. and Mastercard Inc. indicates strong economic interest in the adoption of the technology.
