As a member of both the Chemistry and Life Sciences and the M&A and Securities practices of Kilpatrick Townsend, Alan Dow focuses his practice on patent prosecution, acquisition and counselling, and on intellectual property and commercial transactions. Dr. Dow represents large and small corporations and academic and non-profit research institutions in the U.S. and internationally. He has experience in a number of technical areas, including biotechnology, genomics, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, vaccines, immunology, personalized medicine, and plant science and agriculture.
Dr. Dow has represented clients in U.S. and internationally with regard to patent prosecution, counseling and portfolio management, as well as freedom-to-operate opinions, validity and infringement analyses, and due diligence in support of strategic business planning, mergers and acquisitions, financing and litigation. He also has represented clients in a variety of business transactions such as: licensing; sponsored research and joint research and development; partnering; joint ventures; and sales, supply, service, marketing and distribution arrangements.
Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Dow was Vice President, Intellectual Property and Legal Affairs at Complete Genomics, Inc., a Mountain View, California life sciences company, which has developed and commercialized a DNA sequencing platform for human genome sequencing and analysis. BGI-Shenzhen acquired Complete Genomics in 2013 and named Dr. Dow its Vice President of Intellectual Property. Headquartered in Shenzhen, China, BGI-Shenzhen is the world’s largest genomics services company, providing sequencing and bioinformatics services and systems for research, medical, agricultural, and environmental applications. Since 1994, Dr. Dow has been an intellectual property and transactional attorney in patent law firms as well as large general practice law firms, and in-house with a multinational life science and agriculture company and a small publicly traded vaccine company.
