Jennifer Yao is a registered patent agent who focuses her practice on patent prosecution and counseling primarily in the fields of chemistry and life sciences.

Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Yao worked as a Patent Agent at a boutique intellectual property law firm located in Boston, Massachusetts where she drafted and prosecuted patent applications in the fields of biotechnology, organic chemistry, and chemical biology.

Dr. Yao received her Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from MIT and her B.S. in Chemical Biology from UC Berkeley. While attending MIT, Dr. Yao was a Graduate Researcher with Professor Alice Ting in the Department of Chemistry where her doctoral research focused on the development of organic chemistry-based research tools and technologies that may be used for studying challenging biological problems, especially in the areas of neuroscience and proteomics. She was also a Graduate Teaching Fellow, teaching courses in Principles of Chemical Science, Biological Chemistry II, and Molecular Imaging, where she developed and implemented innovative teaching materials that demonstrate the chemical principles behind modern applications in biology and medicine. She was awarded the MIT Presidential Fellowship and the HHMI Teaching Assistant Fellowship.

While attending UC Berkeley, Dr. Yao was an Undergraduate Research Assistant with Professor Dirk Trauner in the Department of Chemistry, where she worked on the design and synthesis of small molecule photoswitchable ligands for the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and two-photon sensitive organic chromophores for light-activated ion channels. Dr. Yao was also an Undergraduate Research Assistant with Professor David Schaffer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, where she studied the regulation of proneural Mash1 and Ngn1 genes in the Wnt signaling pathway. She was awarded the Melvin J. Heger-Horst Scholarship and the Merck Undergraduate Research Scholarship.

Dr. Yao is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
