Rob Colwell focuses his practice on preparing plans for intellectual property procurement and management of that intellectual property in many fields, including electronics, computers, semiconductor technology, telecommunications, software, and related fields. He has assisted clients in disputes involving the licensing of patents, in negotiation of agreements relating to intellectual property, and in establishing business and licensing plans to exploit the use of intellectual property.

Mr. Colwell's practice includes patent validity and infringement studies, risk assessment, analysis and purchase of patents to use in negotiations and litigation, patent portfolio presentations, product analysis to determine patent infringement and preparation of design-around programs to avoid infringement. In addition, he has assisted many clients in establishing patent departments, as well as establishing U.S. and foreign patent-filing programs. With the expectation of ignition in controlled inertial confinement fusion, Mr. Colwell has devoted significant efforts during the last few years to the study of power plant designs utilizing fusion and fusion-fission hybrid technology, including chamber and materials design, lasers, targets, target delivery systems, cooling and control systems.

Representing a broad range of companies with both small and large patent portfolios, Mr. Colwell has become extremely familiar with the patent portfolios, patent filing strategies and licensing policies of many companies, and has been responsible for negotiating a wide range of intellectual property related agreements, including patent cross-licenses and technology agreements.

Prior to joining the firm, he was a trial lawyer in San Francisco and a patent attorney at a large technology corporation.
