James Chang is a registered patent attorney whose practice focuses on patent prosecution in the medical device, mechanical engineering, energy technology, and material science fields. He also has extensive experience in design patent prosecution. Mr. Chang has worked on patents in specific technical areas including: microfluidic and biochemistry systems; photovoltaic systems; optometric tools and data capture; solar-control tin-films for architectural applications; fiber optic probes for tissue analysis; in vivo sensory devices, offshore wind power turbines; hydrocarbon well tools; microscopes; surgical stents; and automated diagnostics.

Mr. Chang’s counseling experience includes preparing freedom to operate/clearance opinions and counseling as to the scope, validity and enforceability of rights of existing patents. His prosecution experience further includes extensive interaction with inventors to develop applications, as well as management and substantive prosecution for ex-U.S. counterpart patent applications in multiple jurisdictions.

Before joining the firm, Mr. Chang worked as an associate in a Washington, D.C. intellectual property law firm. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Chang was a Research Associate at Gen-Probe, Inc. in San Diego, California where he worked as part of the assay integration team adapting chemistry tests that screen for HIV, hepatitis and West Nile Virus onto an automated platform.

During law school, Mr. Chang was a member and president of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association (SIPLA). From January to April of 2002, he studied abroad at Beijing Foreign Language University in Beijing, China, and is conversational in Mandarin Chinese.
