What: The International Trademark Association (INTA) is partnering with Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP to bring the Unreal Campaign to local high school students. The Unreal Campaign is INTA’s consumer awareness program that aims to educate teenagers about trademark law and enforcement as well as risks of counterfeit products.

Who: INTA is a global association of trademark owners and professionals dedicated to supporting trademarks and related intellectual property in order to protect consumers and to promote fair and effective commerce. Why: The sale of counterfeit goods poses a significant risk to consumers and the U.S. economy. In 2013 alone, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its agencies, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), conducted a total of 24,361 seizures with a retail value over $1.74 billion. These included harmful, and potentially deadly, items such as the 2,215 pharmaceutical seizures in 2013 valued at almost $80,000. Consumers are largely ignorant to the scope and danger of the counterfeit goods or what they can do protect themselves and help tackle this problem.

Who: Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP will host around 50 students from KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School. The event will feature presentations from local law enforcement officers and brand owners. An interactive activity will follow the where the students can immediately apply the knowledge gained during the presentations.
