MEDIA ALERT

April 16, 2013

Members include more than 6,400 trademark owners, professionals and academics from more than 190 countries, who benefit from the Association’s global trademark resources, policy development, education and training, and international network. Founded in 1878, INTA is headquartered in New York City, with offices in Brussels and Washington, D.C., and representatives in Geneva and Mumbai.

Kilpatrick Townsend has more than 620 lawyers in 17 offices extending into the four corners of the continental United States, Asia and Europe, including: Atlanta, GA; Augusta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; Raleigh, NC; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; Silicon Valley, CA ; Walnut Creek, CA; Washington, DC; Winston-Salem, NC; Shanghai; Stockholm; and Tokyo. Why: The sale of counterfeit goods poses a significant risk to consumers and the U.S. economy. In 2013 alone, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its agencies, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), conducted a total of 24,361 seizures with a retail value over $1.74 billion. These included harmful, and potentially deadly, items such as the 2,215 pharmaceutical seizures in 2013 valued at almost $80,000. Consumers are largely ignorant to the scope and danger of the counterfeit goods or what they can do protect themselves and help tackle this problem.
