Daniel Dries focuses his practice on patent preparation, prosecution, and related counseling in a variety of technologies including optics, photonics, advanced sensor technology, wireless communication technology, and software.
Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Dries worked in the Palo Alto headquarters of Palantir Technologies, a technology company that specializes in providing cloud-based data integration and analysis systems for the world’s largest private and public institutions. At Palantir, Dr. Dries served as a Deployment Strategist, a cross-disciplinary role that mixed business development, consulting, and “big data” analysis with product management and engineering. During his tenure at Palantir, Dr. Dries and his team developed and deployed full-stack product solutions for several large corporate partners in a number of verticals including payment processing technology, pharmaceuticals, and cybersecurity. Previously, Dr. Dries worked as a Patent Agent in the Houston, Texas office of an international intellectual property law firm where he drafted and prosecuted patent applications across a wide array of technology areas including optical networking/photonics, distributed sensor networks, advanced sensor technology, digital signal processing, medical imaging, wireless communication technology, nanotechnology, consumer electronics, energy storage systems for grid regulation, CO2 capture systems for power plants, smart card technology, and gene circuits.
Dr. Dries completed his Ph.D. work in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics at Rice University where he and his colleagues built “from the ground up” a complex system that uses lasers and force fields to trap and cool a tiny wisp of gas to a temperature of a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero. To drive temperatures this low, the atomic-cooling system needed to incorporate technology from optics, laser physics, analog and digital electronics, microscopy, spectroscopy, feedback and control systems, image processing, ultrahigh vacuum technology, and advanced duct taping techniques. After the system went live, Dr. Dries and his colleagues worked to uncover new quantum phenomena related to molecule formation, matter wave dynamics and further worked to refine the physics community’s understanding of superfluids and superconductors at the fundamental level.
